Do You Need IELTS to Apply For A Work Permit In Canada?

Updated: Nov 8, 2022

The following article will go through the steps involved in obtaining a work permit in Canada, and a general overview of the application process. The first step is to find out if you require a work permit in the first place.

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures your English language proficiency on a scale of 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert user).

If you wish to move, study, or work in an English-speaking nation like the UK, USA, Canada, or Australia, you must take the IELTS exam.

IELTS is one of the most commonly recognized examinations for demonstrating English language competency, which is sometimes a prerequisite for work visas to Canada.

If you're planning to take the IELTS test, be sure to check with the organization administering your test to find out what their specific requirements are.

What is a Work permit?

A work permit is an official document that allows a foreign national to work in Canada for a specific employer and for a specific period of time. There are different types of work permits, and the requirements vary depending on the type of work permit you need. You may need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) before you can apply for a work permit.

Certain work permits do not require LMIA job offers such as Open Work Permits for spouses of study permit and work permit holders. However, there are certain conditions that need to be met in order to apply for a work permit as a spouse of study visa or work permit holder.

Additionally, there are certain NOC codes that are LMIA exempt and there is no LMIA requirement when you are applying under those NOC codes.

To apply for a work permit, you must:

- have a valid travel document, such as a passport

- be in good health

- have no criminal record

- not pose a security risk to Canada

- satisfactorily complete an immigration medical examination, if required

- prove to an immigration officer that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay in Canada

Do you need IELTS for a work permit in Canada?

IELTS is a test that evaluates your English language proficiency and is widely accepted. Over 10,000 organisations throughout the world, including several in Canada, accept it.

There are two parts to the IELTS: the academic module and the general training module. The academic module is for people who want to study at a university or college in an English-speaking country. The general training module is for people who want to migrate to an English-speaking country or work there.

In Canada, not every job requires IELTS. However, some employers may require it as part of their hiring process. If you are not sure whether or not you need to take the IELTS, it is best to check with the employer before applying for a job.

You can find more information about IELTS on Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

Who needs IELTS for a work permit in Canada?

You can take the IELTS General Training (IGT) test if you want to live, work, or study in Canada. It will prove your English proficiency and ensure that you meet the immigration requirements.

IELTS is generally not required for open work permits.

When trying to figure out your English proficiency level, take a look at the Canadian Language Benchmarks. Certain Canadian immigration officials use Canadian Language Benchmarks when reviewing applications.

Your IELTS test result tells you what your English level is, according to the Common Language Benchmark standards.

If you have already taken the IELTS and did not achieve the required score, don't despair! You can retake the test as many times as you need to until you reach the desired score.
